Impacts on neighborhoods, schools and parking were cited as reasons not to implement legislation
Chula Vista is not interested in opting into Senate Bill 10, the state law intended to ease California’s housing shortage but that has homeowners worried about over development. On Tuesday, the City Council unanimously agreed to no longer entertain what it would mean to implement the legislation — at least for now. The city and any other local government interested in doing so have until January 2029 to make a decision.
They found that about 97 percent of properties in Chula Vista, or 69,000 parcels, would be eligible for densities of up to 10 units per property. City staff said robust, public outreach would be necessary, as well as local control of the provisions of the law, such as limiting the heights and densities.
