The temporary, half-cent sales tax is used to repair and replace aging infrastructure. It sunsets in 2027.

Measure P, the half-cent sales tax that Chula Vista approved in 2016 to repair and replace aging infrastructure, expires in three years. But voters will have a chance to decide whether to renew it before it sunsets.

Councilmember Jose Preciado said giving voters the option to decide whether to renew the measure was the right thing to do. But if they reject doing so, “that’s something that we have to contend with.” According to a city report, Measure P has funded thousands of infrastructure projects, including upgrading more than 7,000 sidewalk segments and 300 residential streets, replacing nearly 140 police and fire vehicles and repairing 20,000 linear feet of storm drain pipes to prevent sinkholes.

A recent city survey asking participants if they would renew Measure P indicated that 69 percent most likely would. The 2,200 respondents said the top three priorities they’d like to see funded are fixing potholes and maintaining local streets, keeping existing parks safe and clean, and addressing homeless encampments and increasing cleanup efforts.
