The film’s story takes place in a near future in which Earth is dying from crop failures and severe dust storms. Meanwhile, a former pilot’s daughter experiences strange gravitational anomalies in her room, which leads the two to a secret NASA base. There, they learn that the organization is planning a manned mission through a wormhole to find a new habitable planet. Given his past as a former NASA pilot, the father is asked to join the team on the mission. While he travels in search of a new home for humanity, his daughter grows up and works towards solving a gravity equation that could save humanity. Christopher Nolan helmed the film and co-wrote the script with his brother, Jonathan Nolan. Reportedly, he was not the first choice to direct Interstellar. Producer Lynda Obst originated the film’s premise after meeting theoretical physicist Kip Thorne . The two approached Steven Spielberg to direct it, and later brought in Jonathan to write the script, who worked on it for four years. After Spielberg dropped out of the project, Jonathan suggested his brother’s name. When Christopher Nolan came on board, he retained the story elements set on Earth at the beginning of the film and reworked the latter half. Interstellar was released worldwide on November 5, 2014, and received a favorable reception.
