and Netflix deal after ending his nearly 20-year partnership with the studio. The director made 10 movies with Warner Bros. from 2002 to 2020 before he, over disagreements with the studio's simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max release strategy in 2021, made the move to Universal Pictures for Oppenheimer and his upcoming movie, The Odyssey. In December 2025, a momentous shock wave was sent through Hollywood when Netflix announced an agreement to acquire Warner Bros., including HBO Max, signaling further consolidation in streaming and raising concerns about the long-term future of moviegoing. Despite Paramount pursuing a hostile bid for the studio, the deal is expected to close in 2026–2027 following regulatory approval. Now, in his first interview with Variety since being elected president of the Directors Guild of America , Nolan expressed"very, very significant concerns" about the absorption of Warner Bros. into Netflix: We have very, very significant concerns about how this is all going to happen. I think it’s a very worrying time for the industry. The loss of a major studio is a huge blow. The DGA has not yet stated a formal stance on the proposed Netflix-Warner Bros. deal, but has held talks with both the streaming service and Paramount as it mounts a hostile bid for the studio."We're interested to hear more about the specifics of how they're going to run these things," Nolan says. Responding to concerns about the future of movie theaters, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has committed to keeping a 45-day release window, though the DGA has pushed for 60 days. At the same time, David Ellison, CEO of Paramount Skydance, has said he would preserve"healthy, traditional" windows and increase the merged studio's theatrical slate to 30 films annually. There are encouraging noises, but that’s not the same as commitments. The theatrical window becomes a sort of easily graspable symbol of whether Warner Bros. will be run as a theatrical distributor or whether it be folded in as a streamer. But the reality is, the issues on the television side and the streaming side are far more important to our membership.
