Christopher Jackson, who played Washington in Hamilton, mixed up the words to the national anthem on Opening Day at Citifield.

Jackson repeated the line"What so proudly we hailed" when he was meant to sing"O'er the ramparts we watched."fans in the stadium, but fans at home were quick to seize on the flub, especially given Jackson's ties to an American icon.

for the Los Angeles Angels and Anaheim Ducks, wrote on X that the incident was"unfortunate," while a user by the name cstratOHMY wrote that her"stomach fell outta me listening to Christopher Jackson flub the lyrics to the National Anthem today. I felt so terrible."An account named MAGAMemeNY wrote:"Chris Jackson. Plays GEORGE WASHINGTON in HAMILTON. Forgets the words to the National Anthem on NATIONAL TV." Most found humor in the mistake: One user, Bill Lehecka, quipped that"it's OK that Christopher Jackson messed up the national anthem; The Star Spangled Banner was written *after* George Washington’s Death…" Another user called MarkVH80 asked,"Which prediction market had Christopher Jackson f'ing up the words to the national anthem at Citi Field? Pay up."And user Cara Jeffrey joked,"Do you think the fact that Christopher Jackson messed up the national anthem threw Skenes off his game?" in reaction to Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes getting hooked in the first inning after giving up five runs to the Mets and recording just two outs and making 31 pitches. The Mets opened the game by giving up a home run and two runs before hammering Skenes and forcing his substitution, with the score standing at 5-3 in favor of the Mets as the team worked through the fourth inning. The Mets are not strangers to goofy moments in the opening of games. Most famously, in 2024, the team had Grimace, the purple mascot from McDonald's,following a three-week slump, after which the team turned the season around and went on to have one of the best records. Should the Mets win, who knows what kind of status that could leave Jackson with the fans, who are all too familiar with mistakes and redemption., ours is different: The Courageous Center—it's not"both sides," it's sharp, challenging and alive with ideas.
