One of the deal’s major stipulations was the Nike logo, as displayed on players’ uniforms and shoes, could not be obscured. The contract spelled out that ankle taping that hides the Nike logo could be a violation of the high-dollar deal. That pressure pre-dated Franklin, who took over for the 2014 season. Bream said he first became aware of it in 2012 when the Penn State football training staff were at an event with Nike representatives.
“I perceived there was undue pressure being applied initially by Nike telling us not to spat,” Bream testified. “If he didn’t feel it was a necessity, he would ask us not to spat them,” Bream testified, referring to the head coach. The trainer did add that there were some players who sought to be spatted for additional ankle support, not due to a medical need.
