Chris Evans on the red carpet
Long before Chris Evans became synonymous with Captain America, he was trying to anchor a very different kind of super-powered franchise. In 2009, Push arrived in theaters as a gritty, street-level sci-fi thriller that many pegged as a potential X-Men alternative — and just as quickly dismissed when critics came down hard on it.
Now, more than 15 years later, the film is finding new life thanks to Pluto, where it’s streaming completely free. Push was directed by Paul McGuigan, whose early career seemed to be modeled around that of Danny Boyle. Push is set in a shadowy version of Hong Kong where people with psychic abilities — collectively known as “the pushed” — are hunted, exploited, and experimented on by a shadowy government agency called Division. Evans stars as Nick Gant, a telekinetic trying to stay off the grid, until he’s pulled back into the chaos by a teenage clairvoyant who claims to have seen a future where they can finally fight back. Is 'Push' Worth Watching? On release, Push struggled to win over critics, many of whom took issue with its dense mythology, uneven pacing, and half-built franchise ambitions. The film currently sits firmly in the “cult curiosity” category — not beloved, not entirely forgotten, but often remembered as a movie that wanted badly to be something bigger than it was allowed to be. As a result, the movie was a huge flop and only grossed around $48 million globally, against a reported budget of under $40 million. The film is now sitting at a woeful 23% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads,"The sci-fi thriller Push is visually flashy but hyperkinetic and convoluted." Alongside Evans in the lead role, the movie has a pretty good cast including some other future Marvel Cinematic Universe stars, featuring Dakota Fanning as Cassie Holmes, Camilla Belle as Kira Hudson, Djimon Hounsou as Henry Carver, Cliff Curtis as Hook Waters, Neil Jackson as Victor Budarin, Ming-Na Wen as Emily Hu, Joel Gretsch as Nick’s father, Corey Stoll as Agent Mack, and Geoff Bell as Agent Jones.
