A Chinese national was intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard while attempting to reach the Bahamas on a makeshift paddleboard. This incident follows a recent surge in Chinese illegal immigration to the United States, with authorities uncovering a smuggling operation in Florida just last week.
A Chinese migrant was apprehended by the U.S. Coast Guard while floating on a paddleboard approximately 25 miles off Freeport, Bahamas . The man was discovered by the Cutter Seahorse and transported back to the Bahamas . Images and videos released by the U.S. Coast Guard revealed the individual paddling on what appeared to be two boards connected, with some luggage secured to them.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another apprehension in Coral Gables, Florida, where 26 Chinese migrants landed in what authorities described as a migrant smuggling operation originating in the Bahamas. Coral Gables Police Chief Hudak Jr. stated that the migrants likely arrived by boat, utilizing a secluded area in the southern part of Coral Gables. They reportedly entered through a canal system leading to a private marina. Two alleged smugglers, both of Cuban and Puerto Rican descent, were apprehended alongside the 26 Chinese migrants, comprising nine women and 17 men. Police confirmed that the alleged smugglers were in possession of a firearm. The U.S. has witnessed a dramatic surge in the number of Chinese illegal immigrants over recent years. Between fiscal years 2021 and 2024, their number increased by more than 8,000%. This escalation coincides with concerns raised by U.S. lawmakers regarding China's growing influence in South and Central America and its advancements in the tech industry, which are perceived as national security threats. The Biden administration has taken measures to address this influx, including expanding the use of 'expedited removal,' a process that allows U.S. Customs and Border officials to deport individuals without a formal immigration court hearing or appearance before a judge.
