A Chinese national was intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard while attempting to illegally migrate to the United States on a paddleboard. The man was spotted approximately 25 miles off Freeport, Bahamas by the Cutter Seahorse, according to a U.S. Coast Guard social media post. Photos and video released by the agency show the individual paddling on what appears to be two boards connected, with some luggage strapped to them. The unidentified Chinese national was returned to the Bahamas .
This apprehension follows a recent incident in Coral Gables, Florida, where 26 Chinese migrants arrived in the city. Authorities believe these individuals arrived by boat from the Bahamas, entering through a secluded area and a canal leading to a private marina. In that case, two suspected smugglers, along with the 26 Chinese migrants (nine women and 17 men), were apprehended. The alleged smugglers, of Cuban and Puerto Rican descent, were found carrying a firearm. The number of illegal immigrants from China entering the U.S. has surged in recent years, with a more than 8,000% increase between fiscal years 2021 and 2024. This influx coincides with concerns raised by U.S. lawmakers about China's growing influence in South and Central America and its rapidly developing technology sector, which they perceive as national security threats
