The British Red Cross said it had supported many individuals struggling to afford rent payments who were not eligible for rental support from the council, as this is often targetted at those with connections to the local area. It recommended the launch of rent deposit schemes which include Ukrainians to propel people into private rentals, an “immediate” increase to the monthly payments made to Homes for Ukraine hosts, and allowing those whose housing situation has fallen apart under the Ukraine Family Scheme to be re-matched with Homes for Ukraine hosts.
She was moved to an emergency guest house, which was also housing people suffering mental health, drugs and alcohol problems, where she stayed for two months. She said the “conditions were very bad”, there was nowhere to wash her clothes and it regularly smelt of marijuana. Elena, whose husband and family are still in Ukraine, was told she needed to stay for 56 days while her homelessness case was assessed.
“I wrote to the temporary accommodation team and asked them how long I need to stay. They responded saying unfortunately we can’t propose you your own place because we don’t have the available accommodation. You are in the queue, and you just need to wait,” she said.The government figures of 4,295 Ukrainian households in England being homeless at some point were highest in the east and south-east of England, which contained 60 per cent of the Ukrainian households at risk of homelessness.
Veronika Riepina, who came to the UK under the family scheme, had a “nightmare” trying to find a private rental, in the end resorting to finding a guarantor on Facebook. Veronika said she knows many fellow Ukrainians who have struggled to access the private rental market Veronika said she knows many Ukrainians who have had difficulties finding private rentals, “especially families with young kids”.
