El organismo divulgó que el número de menores identificados como separados o no acompañados alcanzó la cifra de 4.476 casos hasta noviembre de este año, frente a los poco más de 3.000 reportados en noviembre de 2023 y los 3.300 que se reportaron a diciembre de 2023. Según Unicef, los adolescentes migrantes no acompañados enfrentan mayores riesgos, incluyendo exclusión educativa, violencia sexual, trata, explotación y abuso.
Un cambio que se destaca es la edad de los menores; cerca del 60% de los que han transitado este año por la selva Darién, tienen entre 13 y 17 años, un cambio significativo respecto a años anteriores, cuando la mayoría eran niños menores de 5 años. Y aunque entre enero y noviembre de 2024, se redujo en 40% el número de niños, niñas y adolescentes que ingresaron a Panamá a través de Darién, en comparación del mismo período en 2023, la cantidad sigue siendo significativa, 63.647. Además, una de cada 5 personas que llegó es menor de edad.
