Mobile County Commission celebrates the reopening of Chickasabogue Park on February 23rd with a festive community event featuring music, food trucks, lawn games, and more.
The Mobile County Commission will reopen Chickasabogue Park on Sunday, February 23rd, with a community celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. The celebration will include a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony, music, face painting, food trucks, lawn games, and more at Chickasabogue Park (760 Aldock Road, Eight Mile, AL 36613). Improved courts (multiuse: basketball, pickleball, tennis) are now available at the park. Community Celebration attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for comfort.
Those wishing to enjoy Chickasabogue Creek should bring their own kayak or canoe. Food and beverages will be sold through food trucks at the event. Park gates will open at noon on Sunday, February 23rd. To remain family-friendly, please note that alcohol is not permitted in Mobile County parks. Once Chickasabogue Park reopens, only areas undergoing active construction or areas posing safety concerns will be closed.Chickasabogue Park is a 1,100-acre outdoor recreation facility and wildlife refuge located less than 15 minutes from downtown Mobile. It is Mobile County Commission’s largest park. Chickasabogue Park provides a wide variety of outdoor activities in a natural setting while protecting the environment and preserving the diversity of indigenous plants and animals. The park underwent extensive construction and renovation as part of Mobile County’s Parks Initiative. Much of the work at Chickasabogue Park focused on park-wide utilities and infrastructure improvements, including underground utilities such as water/sewer and necessary lift stations, fire hydrants, and fire mains. These improvements required the entire park to be closed for public safety.Multiple delays occurred during the project, stemming from supply chain disruptions and increased material costs resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. These challenges made it difficult to award bids, and some redesign and replanning were necessary. The RV campground is currently under construction. The existing boat launch remains closed for safety reasons. Mobile County anticipates beginning the renovation of the beach area and the construction of a new boat ramp later in 2025. The master plan for Chickasabogue Park includes an events and interpretive center, along with numerous other improvements yet to be realized. Funding for these projects, in part, comes from the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) of 2006, which addresses offshore oil drilling. A portion of the local conservation plan for GOMESA funds is dedicated to increasing public access to shoreline recreational areas, such as those along Chickasabogue Creek, which connects to Mobile Bay
