Griffith Park has reopened to the public following the Sunset fire that impacted the area. While the Los Angeles Zoo, Autry Museum, and hiking trails are accessible, Runyon Canyon Park remains closed due to fire damage.
Griffith Park has reopened to the public, just over a week after the Sunset fire scorched the area. The 4,210-acre park and its extensive network of hiking trails welcomed visitors at 8 a.m. Thursday, with the observatory set to open at noon. The Los Angeles Zoo and the Autry Museum of the American West, both situated within Griffith Park , also reopened; the museum is offering complimentary admission through Monday. Meanwhile, nearby Runyon Canyon Park remains closed.
The Sunset fire was first reported on January 8th at 2350 N. Solar Drive, located just west of the popular 160-acre Hollywood Hills hiking destination. Runyon Canyon was initially scheduled to reopen Thursday, but the city's Department of Recreation and Parks reversed course, citing fire damage. 'For your safety and to allow for habitat rehabilitation, the park will remain closed until further notice,' the department stated. A day after its ignition, Los Angeles firefighters achieved 100% containment of the Sunset fire, which had prompted mandatory evacuation orders and massive traffic congestion in Hollywood and the Hollywood Hills. Firefighters on the scene reported that the fire had reached an estimated 50 acres at its peak, with flames advancing towards the luxurious mansions lining North Curson Avenue. The blaze briefly sparked widespread alarm throughout Hollywood. The evacuation encompassed iconic landmarks such as the TCL Chinese Theatre, the Hollywood Pantages Theatre, the Dolby Theatre, and Ovation Hollywood, the shopping center situated in the heart of Hollywood. Firefighters attributed the successful containment of the blaze to the efficient use of water-dropping aircraft. They also highlighted the proximity of the Hollywood Reservoir, which allowed for frequent water-refilling trips. Citing improved conditions on the ground, the Los Angeles Fire Department lifted all evacuation orders for the fire by 7:30 the following morning. Several parks around Los Angeles remain closed due to ongoing wildfires, including Crestwood Hills Park, O’Melveny Park, Palisades Park & Recreation Center, Rustic Canyon, Stetson Ranch Equestrian Park, and Wattles Garden Park. The parks department advised hikers to strongly avoid hiking trails, hillsides, and forested areas of parks during periods of high wind and particularly dangerous red flag warnings. With ash and dust from active fire zones and burn scars permeating the air, health officials are urging individuals to minimize their time outdoors. Experts emphasize that wildfire smoke poses a health risk to everyone, and all residents should be concerned about potential health effects. If outdoor exposure is unavoidable, they recommend wearing an N95 mask
