The death of Emmanuel Damas in ICE custody, coupled with a surge in detainee fatalities, has prompted calls for a federal investigation. Data reveals a concerning increase in mortality rates within immigration detention facilities, raising serious questions about the conditions and care provided to detainees.
Last week, Presner Nelson visited a shopping mall with a poignant mission: to find a suit his brother, Emmanuel Damas, would wear in his casket. Damas, a Haitian immigrant, died in March while in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ). According to Nelson, his brother had been complaining of a toothache for approximately two weeks, a condition Nelson believes could have been treated.
This tragic event has ignited outrage and calls for a federal investigation, particularly regarding the circumstances surrounding Damas's death and the conditions within ICE detention facilities. Damas, who Nelson asserts arrived in the U.S. legally and had a pending Temporary Protected Status application, became another grim statistic in a disturbing trend of rising deaths in immigration detention under the current administration
