A coalition of artists including Madonna, Pedro Pascal, Keke Palmer, and Ms. Rachel, as well as physicians and policy experts, have published an open letter demanding the immediate closure of the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas.
A broad coalition of artists including Madonna, Pedro Pascal, Keke Palmer, and Ms. Rachel, as well as physicians and policy experts,“No child should be locked in an immigration detention center. We, the undersigned, call for the immediate closure of the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement family detention center in Texas and an end to the detention of children and families,” the letter reads.
“Children held in immigration detention endure trauma, neglect and conditions that violate basic standards of health, safety, dignity and human rights.” The letter is addressed to the Department of Homeland Security and CoreCivic, the company that manages Dilley under a federal contract expected to. Other celebrities joining the effort to close Dilley include musicians, actors, filmmakers, and athletes such as Javier Bardem, Brittney Griner, America Ferrera, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Elliot Page, Brandi Carlile, Hannah Einbinder, Wunmi Mosaku, and Jane Fonda. “Every child, everywhere, deserves to feel safe, to be cared for, and to be treated with dignity,” Ms. Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, said in a statement. “We can all agree that no child should be locked in an immigration detention center and subjected to these cruel conditions. This is not who we want to be.”experiencing delays and denials of medical care, finding worms and mold in their food, not having access to clean water, hearing staff threatening to separate families, and being unable to sleep due to staff leaving the lights on around the clock. In late January, detaineesagainst the conditions they experienced at Dilley, chanting “¡Libertad!” and holding signs reading “Libertad para los niños” ., leading medical organizations oppose the detention of children because the conditions they face in custody can meet the criteria for and result in lifelong negative consequences for their physical, mental, and emotional health. “There are no safe ways to detain children, and history has really shown that to us, whether it’s with families or,” Dr. Sural Shah, a Los Angeles–based pediatrician and chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Council on Immigrant Child and Family Health, previously told me.that some of the health issues children experience as a result of being detained include prolonged stress impacting organ systems such as the cardiovascular and immune systems;Experts say the longer a child is detained, the worse his health outcomes can be. Another major concern is that the Trump administration is detaining childrenThe federal government is not required to hold immigrants, including children, in detention centers, experts say. “We don’t have to detain people. It’s not a law that we have — it’s a policy that we have opted to do,” Dr. Katherine Peeler, a medical adviser with Physicians for Human Rights who has studied the issue of children in immigration detention, previously told me. “The majority of people are administratively detained. They’re not criminally detained, particularly those who are in family detention. We have systems in place where you can be released with some check-ins with ICE.”amid mounting public pressure. While the detention center and its conditions have been the focus of efforts like today’s letter, parents and children are also being held for extended periods at other facilities, including, advocates say. Because of this, the letter reads, “Our commitment does not end with closure. We demand transparency, accountability, and systemic reforms to prevent these abuses from happening anywhere in the United States.”Picking Up the Pieces After Mom’s DeportationOh, Now the Trump Administration Wants Kids to Read After her husband’s boss spent a year dismantling the Department of Education, Usha Vance has launched a books podcast for children. After I experienced some debilitating complications, I started reflecting on why I felt the need to get plastic surgery in the first place.L.A.’s Hottest Club Is the Paul McCartney Concert Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, John Mayer, and many, many more pulled up to the Fonda on Saturday night to see “Blackbird” live. The Luxury Birth Center Breaking Hearts on the Upper East Side The Alexandra Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns promised privacy and Chanel.
