Multiple people were injured after the roof collapsed at the Apollo Theater in far northwest suburban Belvidere during the severe weather outbreak.Emergency managers in La Salle County sad they have received reports of storm damage including downed trees and power poles in Peru, but otherwise are still assessing the level of damage.
There are large areas of standing water, largely where main streets intersect with side roads. It is difficult to tell how deep the water is, though it appeared to be about a foot at its deepest point. Officials caution drivers not to drive through standing water. In downtown Joliet there were blustery winds and some areas of standing water by 7 p.m. Illinois emergency management officials began discussing the possible storm outcomes three days ago and said they are well-prepared to handle any severe weather that comes through. State officials said they've been coordinating with regional directors around the state to determine the best way to get resources to affected areas as quickly as possible once any storms pass.
"The Storm Prediction Center doesn't issue those hatched marks unless they're looking at ingredients coming together where it's showing a greater probability of some stronger tornadoes," Scott said.Suburban volunteers prepare severe weather kitsVolunteers with the Salvation Army spent Friday building 3,000 severe weather kits to be used when disaster strikes. They contain, among other things, scrub brushes, brooms, chemicals to help clean and gloves.
"Father's Day in 2021 at about 11 o'clock at night, we had a tornado come through here and it was a severe tornado that damaged about 150 homes," said Fire Chief Mark Puknaitis. "You just never know when these things are going to go. So we want to make sure that you're prepared."
