The National Weather Service is warning of a "particularly dangerous situation" with the potential for intense tornadoes to develop across Iowa and Illinois.is in effect for Lee and La Salle counties until 8 p.m. and De Kalb, Boon, and McHenry county until 8:30 p.m.is in effect until 10 p.m.
Air travel in Chicago is being affected by the severe weather. As of 6:45 p.m., Midway International Airport is reporting 128 flight cancellations and average delays of less than 15 minutes, while O'Hare International Airport is reporting 211 flight cancellations and average delays of 79 minutes. The FAA issued another ground stop at O'Hare for thunderstorms until 8 p.m., and said the ground delay has been extended until 11:59 p.m.
In downtown Joliet there were blustery winds and some areas of standing water by 7 p.m. Illinois emergency management officials began discussing the possible storm outcomes three days ago and said they are well-prepared to handle any severe weather that comes through. State officials said they've been coordinating with regional directors around the state to determine the best way to get resources to affected areas as quickly as possible once any storms pass.
"We are watching the weather closely, and we are getting ready to respond here too. We have our canteens ready, our volunteers on standby," said Karen Hanton, emergency disaster services manager for Salvation Army Chicago. The Naperville Fire Department says they're ready to respond to any downed trees, electrical fires, or anyone stranded or trapped.
