Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson continues his sharp criticism of President Donald Trump, accusing him of attempting to dismantle the U.S. Constitution and endanger vulnerable populations. Johnson responded to a reporter's question about his potential testimony regarding sanctuary cities in Washington, D.C., by launching a scathing attack on Trump's administration, comparing it to a 'raggedy' government and claiming that those in power have not accepted the results of the Civil War.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson continued his criticism of President Donald Trump on Wednesday, stating that anyone doubting the consequences of a Confederate victory should have no further questions under his administration. During a press conference, a reporter inquired about Johnson's plans to testify in Washington, D.C. regarding sanctuary cities as the Trump administration intensified operations targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records. House Republicans , including U.S. Rep.
James Comer, R-Tenn., chair of the GOP-controlled House Committee on Oversight and Reform, have called upon sanctuary city mayors to testify next month about the policy's impact on public safety and their refusal to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. Johnson responded by stating, 'This oversight committee, of all the things that they want to have sight over, they should look at the White House right now. 'That White House is being ran in one of the most raggedy forms of government that I've ever seen. If anybody is questioning whether or not what our country would look like had the Confederacy won, there should be no question now. They want us to be afraid. Do not be afraid, Chicago.' Johnson asserted that he would not be intimidated by an individual who refuses to stand up to another who believes 'he's a supreme being.' He further accused Trump of disregarding the U.S. Constitution by failing to fulfill his duties. 'If they want to have a real discussion about undocumented individuals who are criminals, they should look at the very individuals who enslaved my people and colonized this land,' Johnson stated.Earlier in the press conference, a reporter questioned the mayor about any softening in his rhetoric regarding the re-litigation of the Civil War. Johnson maintained his stance, stating, 'I still believe that there are people who have not accepted the results of the Civil War, and here’s the thing: I said that before this administration took office. Unfortunately, I’m right. I mean, you have an entire administration that is looking to take away federal protections for the people who are most vulnerable. 'So, no, my position has not changed,' he added. Johnson's comments follow over a week after he reiterated his commitment to oppose Trump's sweeping immigration reform aimed at removing dangerous undocumented immigrants accused of crimes from the U.S. upon his return to the Oval Office. On the first day of his second term, Trump issued ten executive orders intended to overhaul U.S. immigration law and policy, subsequently leading to armed federal immigration agents conducting deportation raids across cities. In a letter, Comer requested information and documents from Johnson and other sanctuary city mayors pertaining to each city's sanctuary policies. Sanctuary cities limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Supporters argue that immigration enforcement is the responsibility of the federal government, while opponents contend that sanctuary policies harbor criminals and those in the country illegally, endangering the public, including both legal and undocumented immigrants.
