The Salvation Army and city resources are providing warming shelters and support services for Chicago residents facing frigid temperatures.
The Salvation Army Harbor Light facility in West Humboldt Park is functioning as a 24-hour warming shelter in response to the freezing temperatures gripping Chicago. The organization is not only providing shelter but also actively checking on individuals who choose to remain outdoors during this cold spell. A mobile outreach team from The Salvation Army is diligently distributing hot soup and essential supplies daily to people experiencing homelessness across all areas of Chicago.
These efforts are bolstered by the kitchen crew at the Harbor Light facility, which prepares three meals a day, amounting to approximately 30,000 meals each month. The mobile team also plays a crucial role in connecting individuals to shelter or arranging transportation to safety when required. 'Any families that need help, we have food here as well as a food pantry that we run, so we try and help out as much as we can during this inclement weather. Please come out of the cold, get shelter as best you can, please,' stated Ward.Warming shelters are also available at city park districts, libraries, and county courthouses in Skokie, Maywood, and Markham. Emergency room physician Dr. William Weber of Rush University Medical Center underscored the dangers associated with cold exposure. 'If you’re bundled up you can get by longer. No one’s designed to undergo these temperatures for long periods of time,' said Weber. He further added that hypothermia can develop insidiously, affecting anyone, and that numerous patients are also seeking medical attention for slip-and-fall injuries resulting from icy conditions. Medical experts advise that initial signs of frostbite, such as pain in cold hands, should be addressed by running warm (not hot) water over the affected area. Shivering, dizziness, or confusion are indicators that immediate medical assistance may be necessary. The Salvation Army and other organizations remain committed to providing their services as long as the extreme cold weather persists. Residents are strongly encouraged to utilize warming shelters and seek assistance if needed
