Chicago residents will experience a dramatic temperature swing this weekend, with temperatures plunging from the 40s to the single digits and wind chills potentially reaching as low as -25 degrees. A strong cold front will usher in the change, bringing rain that could transition to snow. The frigid conditions are expected to persist through early next week, with frostbite a real concern. Relief from the cold is anticipated towards the middle of next week.
Temperatures reached well into the 40s on Friday afternoon under mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. Highs climbed to the upper 40s for most of the Chicagoland area. However, a strong cold front is set to move through the region Friday night, bringing an end to the brief warm spell. This front will usher in the chance of rain along and south/east of I-55 this evening and tonight. The rain may transition into a wintry mix or snow early Saturday morning before moving out of the area.
Saturday will see a significant drop in temperatures, with highs only reaching the 20s. Gusty north-northwest winds will create wind chill temperatures in the single digits. There is a possibility of lake effect snow developing and impacting northwest Indiana, but this is not certain and requires monitoring. Temperatures will continue to fall as we head into Sunday, with daytime temperatures expected to be in the single digits. Wind chills could plummet as low as -5 to -15. By Sunday night into Monday morning, temperatures dipping below zero will result in wind chill values potentially reaching -20 to -25 by daybreak Monday.Monday and Tuesday will be frigid with subzero lows, single-digit highs, and wind chills well below zero. Prolonged exposure to these conditions could lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Fortunately, relief from the cold is on the horizon. Temperatures are expected to begin warming towards the middle to end of next week. Wednesday's highs should reach the mid-20s, and we're looking at near 30 degrees on Thursday
