Its menu and decor will remain intact.
just three weeks ago, the much-cherished Bette’s Oceanview Diner on Berkeley’s Fourth Street is reopening — with a few key changes., will be to its name and its business model. Seemingly in respect to owner Manfred Kroening and his wife and restaurant namesake Bette , the restaurant will be called just Oceanview Diner. The restaurant will also pivot to a co-op model, comparable to fellow Berkeley favorite the Cheeseboard Collective.
But not much else will change, it appears. The menu — and the charming mid-century decor — will remain fully intact, said Berkeleyside. "I really didn’t like the idea of something else going there, and also I didn’t like the idea of people who had been working there 10, 20, 30 years, of not being able to continue to work there for the rest of their career if they wanted to," William Bishop, the financial manager at Bette’s and now a co-owner, toldLast month, Kroening openly wished to Berkeleyside for “a new generation of young people who will take over the space and make it something cool again.
