Afternoon temperatures across the Bay Area are expected to be 10 to 20 degrees above normal in coming days.

FILE - Sunny, unseasonably warm weather is in the forecast for the San Francisco Bay Area on Feb. 21, 2020.Unusually warm temperatures are in the San Francisco Bay Area forecast Sunday and into next week, with afternoon highs in the 70s in inland areas and some spots potentially hitting 80 degrees next week.

With high pressure building over the region, afternoon temperatures are expected to be 10 to 20 degrees above normal, depending on the location, into next week, with Thursday likely to see the highest temperatures of the warm spell, the National Weather Service said. Temperatures will cool down significantly overnight, dropping to near or at normal.

“We have high pressure over the area, and generally when we have high pressure that leads to a drier air mass,” said Drew Peterson, a meteorologist with the weather service. “With a drier air mass, you get clear skies and that leads to fewer clouds when you have higher highs in the day and lower lows overnight. We’re going to be looking at that set up over several days.”are most likely to hit 80 degrees next week, but Peterson said some spots in the North Bay may reach this mark.

San Francisco is predicted to hit afternoon highs in the mid-60s through Tuesday and then break into the low 70s Wednesday and Thursday, the weather service
