Chef Alex Holt, known for her one-woman operation at the original Roxanne in Philadelphia's Italian Market, has opened a larger restaurant in Old City. The new Roxanne, located at 607 S 2nd St., offers a more spacious dining experience while maintaining Holt's signature artistic and politically charged approach to food.

In true Roxanne fashion, Holt did most of the renovations in the new space herself, like painting a wall of artificial lemons and canvases: one with slices of cheese, another with an exhortation to enjoy one’s dinner, but containing an unprintable expletive. Holt’s mother, TK NAME, The built the tables. “When I have money, I’ll buy barstools,” Holt said.
That isn’t to say, she’s leaving her introversion behind. “We didn’t have a friends-and-family, and I don’t think we will. I don’t feel that close with anyone.” Rather, Holt has been months in soft opening mode, cooking dinners in the new space mostly solo, with another cook in the kitchen, and two servers on the floor.
