Sunday’s game in Denver could be must-win if the Chargers hope to clinch the fifth-seeded AFC playoff spot – or they could lock it up before their game starts
COSTA MESA — After all the must-win games in recent weeks, after all the hand wringing and jangling nerves, after all the dominoes fell into place, the playoff-bound Chargers still have miles to run before they can rest. So, they went back to work once more Friday to prepare for their regular-season finale. The Chargers’ game at 1:25 p.m. Sunday against the Denver Broncos could be meaningful, a game they must win if they hope to clinch the fifth-seeded spot for AFC wild-card weekend.
“Our players know going into this game we’re going to play our players and we’re going to play well. As the facts on the ground change in the game, things could change. We’re not going in with the mindset of ‘Oh, he’s not going to play, he’s not going to play.’ We’re going to to win and play our best.”
As it stands now, going into this weekend’s games around the AFC, the Chargers would face the winner of Saturday’s game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans in next weekend’s wild-card game in a matchup of the fifth- and fourth-seeded teams. “I don’t think we’re going to be too worried about anything other than our game,” quarterback Justin Herbert said. “We’re doing our best just to focus on us, as the Chargers, and doing everything we can to play our best on Sunday. A lot could happen outside of it, but as long as we’re focused on what we’re doing, that’s what’s important.”
