For decades, public workers who got a pension or other government retirement funding didn't get social security.

CINCINNATI - Melissa Johnson has taught kindergarten for a public school system in Warren County for 20 years. She also worked in the private sector for 20 years before that.

The caps on such benefits impact public employees ranging from police officers to firefighters, teachers, and others, with those impacted exceeding 2.1 million nationally. The new payments would cost an additional $20 billion nationwide over 10 years. Landsman is trying to collect 218 signatures in Congress to bring the bill to a vote over objections from Republican leadership. He has about 170 signatures currently, saying it needs to be done on behalf of those who gave their lives to public service.

Local 12 also reached out to Orlando Sonza, Landsman's Republican opponent in the upcoming election, for his thoughts on the bill.
