Former West Alabama standout Christian Saulsberry was shot and killed on Saturday, the Edmonton Elks have announced.
“Early Saturday morning, the Edmonton Elks were devastated to learn of the death of running back Christian Saulsberry after he was shot in Memphis, Tennessee,” the. “First and foremost, our hearts go out to his family during this incredibly difficult time. Our condolences are also extended to his friends, including the many teammates and coaches both here in Edmonton and elsewhere, that he impacted throughout his football career.
“Christian’s contributions to our football team both on the field and in our locker room were significant during his one season with the Green and Gold. His positivity and energy for life will be dearly missed.”, reported deputies responded to a shooting at a party in Walls, Mississippi, at 3:20 a.m. Saturday and found Saulsberry with two gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead while being transported to the hospital.
Mark McDaniel was arrested in Memphis on Saturday afternoon and charged with second-degree murder in Saulsberry’s death,Saulsberry played in Edmonton’s final eight games of the 2022 season, making an impact on the Elks’ return game. While he had a 7-yard run and a 17-yard reception for Edmonton’s offense, Saulsberry averaged 12.4 yards on 19 punt returns, 18.7 yards on 34 kickoff returns and 26.0 yards on three missed-field goal returns.“Our hearts are heavy with the news of the passing of a member of our CFL family,”. “Christian Saulsberry will be dearly missed by his family, friends, teammates, coaches and loved ones. Saulsberry came to West Alabama from Itawamba Community College. He had 51 receptions for 621 yards and four touchdowns and averaged 28.9 yards on 29 kickoff returns in 2018 and 34 receptions for 580 yards and three touchdowns and averaged 26.7 yards on 23 kickoff returns in 2019 for the Tigers.Saulsberry had returned to football by playing in Fan Controlled Football earlier this year before getting his opportunity in the CFL.
