Central Ohio communities, including Powell, are recovering from high-speed winds that caused significant damage to structures and uprooted trees. The local YMCA suffered roof damage, and residents are dealing with fallen trees and logistical challenges related to cleanup.

POWELL , Ohio — Cleanup efforts are underway across central Ohio after high-speed wind gusts tore through the region, leaving a trail of uprooted trees and structural damage in their wake. In Powell , the local YMCA bore the brunt of the storm's power.

Near hurricane-force winds ripped the roof off the facility’s gym, forcing officials to close the area for the foreseeable future. The damage extended to the parking lot, where a bent pole crashed down near the building."It was really scary," one resident said. "I was driving down Riverside Drive and trees had fallen over and you had to dodge them on the course. It was pretty hesitant for driving at that point." Just down the street, Michael Finnegan returned home from dinner to find an 80-foot tall pine tree had been uprooted in his yard. Despite the size of the tree, Finnegan said he felt lucky. The pine landed in a "perfect line" between his home and a nearby power line, leaving the structures untouched but creating a massive gash in the soil where the roots once stood. "I mean, it's the perfect line. Just dropped it right in there," Finnegan said. "Thank you," he added while looking toward the sky. While his home was spared, the road to recovery is just beginning. Finnegan noted that the cleanup process involves a series of logistical hurdles. "Well, first you call the insurance company just to see if home insurance will help take care of it," Finnegan said. "Then you call some regular tree outfits that will possibly either buy it or just remove it for you. The third option is to actually pay somebody to come and take it out or do it yourself." As chainsaws and heavy machinery hummed throughout Powell on Saturday, the prevailing sentiment among neighbors was one of relief. While the physical devastation is significant, no major injuries were reported in the immediate area."You can always repair stuff, repair, replace," one resident said. "But you know, if it's human life, when you're gone, you're gone. No replacing that."Utility officials are calling the aftermath of yesterday’s windstorm the most significant blow to the region’s electrical grid in over a decade, as crews work tThree of the six National Guard Airmen who died in arefueling aircraft crashin Iraq were members of the Ohio Air National GuardFamily and friends are remembering a former standout athlete who died while serving his country in support of Operation Epic Fury.Tyler Simmons, 28, of ColumbusYMCA remains closed as crews tape off parking lot after exterior roof damage Delaware County Building safety says a 911 call about the roof to the YMCA coming off came in around 5 p.m. Friday. They say they have been able to go back into
