The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has abruptly suspended all collaborations with the World Health Organization (WHO), effective immediately. A memo issued by CDC official John Nkengasong directed staff to cease working with WHO through various channels, including technical working groups, advisory boards, and in-person or virtual meetings. This sudden halt raises concerns among experts, who point to potential setbacks in investigating and containing outbreaks of Marburg virus, mpox, and bird flu. President Trump's executive order to withdraw the U.S. from WHO last week, while requiring Congressional approval and fulfilling financial obligations, has been followed by this immediate cessation of communication and collaboration.

President Donald Trump signs an executive order on birthright citizenship in the Oval Office of the White House, Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, in Washington.

A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official, John Nkengasong, sent a memo to senior leaders at the agency on Sunday night telling them that all agency staff who work with the WHO must immediately stop their collaborations and “await further guidance.” The Associated Press viewed a copy of Nkengasong's memo, which said the stop-work policy applied to “all CDC staff engaging with WHO through technical working groups, coordinating centers, advisory boards, cooperative agreements or other means — in person or virtual.” It also says CDC staff are not allowed to visit WHO offices.
