President Trump signs an executive order to pause a law banning TikTok and shield businesses associated with the app from liability. The order aims to find a solution that balances national security concerns with the continued use of the platform by millions of Americans. However, legal experts argue that the order does not fully address the complex legal issues surrounding TikTok's ownership and operation.

President Trump signed an executive order on Monday, seeking to temporarily halt a law banning TikTok and offering a legal shield to businesses associated with the popular video app. The order will pause the law for 75 days, protecting companies that collaborate with TikTok from liability. This, according to the order, will provide the Trump administration time to find a resolution that safeguards national security while preserving a platform used by 170 million Americans.

'Essentially with TikTok I have the right to sell it or close it,' Trump stated from the Oval Office after signing the executive action. 'We may have to get approval from China. I'm not sure. I'm sure they'll approve.' He further indicated that his administration would work towards a 'joint venture' between the United States and undisclosed entities.Trump's actions are directly tied to a TikTok law which came into effect on Sunday, criminalizing — with hefty fines — any support for TikTok as long as it remains under the control of ByteDance, a Beijing-based technology company. Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle, who expressed concerns in April that TikTok could be exploited by the Chinese government for spying or malicious data collection, believe the app's well-documented national security risks justify a forced sale. If TikTok remained under ByteDance's ownership, the crackdown would have commenced on January 19th.In anticipation of this date, companies providing web hosting and cloud infrastructure to TikTok, including Oracle and Akamai, severed ties with the app. Google and Apple removed TikTok from their app stores. TikTok even took the extraordinary step of reactivating its servers and sending notifications to users crediting Trump for their return after he, then still the president-elect, announced on Truth Social his intention to take executive action to delay the ban law's start date and provide legal protection to TikTok's business partners upon assuming office. Companies reacted differently to Trump's social media announcement. Oracle and Akamai reinstated their support, while Apple and Google remained hesitant, as restoring ByteDance-owned TikTok to their app stores would violate the law and expose them to potential billions in fines. Trump's executive action, legal experts argue, does little to change this legal landscape.

TikTok argues there is no evidence to support claims it poses a national security threat or sends propaganda. Despite previous attempts by the Trump Administration to ban the app, President Trump now supports TikTok, potentially as a strategy to win the youth vote. The Supreme Court's decision could have major implications for the future of TikTok in America.
