Donovan Mitchell is OUT for the Cavaliers tonight against Charlotte, along with Jarrett Allen.
Even though the hurt finger hasn’t caused him to miss any time, Mitchell recently told cleveland.com it’s still bothersome, especially when trying to either finish with his left hand around the rim or on catch-and-shoots. In recent days, Mitchell has been extending his usual post-practice shooting sessions, trying to get a better feel for playing with his finger continuously taped and wrapped -- a way to straighten the finger and keep it stabilized.
Typically, the injury takes multiple weeks to heal, but Mitchell has been determined to play through it during this final playoff push, with the fourth-seeded Cavs setting sights on one of the Eastern Conference’s top 4 spots -- and homecourt advantage in the first round. Mitchell scored 23 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, during Cleveland’s 114-108 victory over Charlotte on Sunday night. The Cavs have won four of their last five overall.
Tuesday night is the final matchup of an exhausting four-game, two-city, eight-day road trip that started in Miami last week. It’s also the first game of a back-to-back, as the Cavs will host third-seeded Philadelphia Wednesday night at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse -- the final back-to-back this year and a showdown that will determine the season series and tiebreaker between the two conference rivals. In 59 games this season, Mitchell is averaging a career-high 27.6 points on 47.
