Merrill originally inked a 10-day deal as a call-up from the organization’s G League affiliate Charge earlier this month.
“Playing in the NBA was always a dream of mine in high school and to be honest, it was never something that I realistically expected,” Merrill said on March 3. “Guys from where I grow up, it just doesn’t happen, right? For most guys, it doesn’t happen.
“Everyone wants to get to the NBA and I think that’s why most guys are in the G league. For me, it was, ‘Let’s go play, let’s go see where I’m at, see what I can do, I feel like I’m good enough to be at this level, feel like I’ve shown that, so let’s show that in the G League and if it works out then great and if it doesn’t then we will figure it out.’”
For now, it’s working out. Merrill is going to have a multi-year contract to stay in Cleveland and keep his NBA dream alive.
