New data indicates that cases of meningitis have more than doubled in the past year in England.
A meningitis charity says it is ‘very concerned’ at new data indicating cases of the disease more than doubled in a year in England.
The UK became the first country in the world to introduce a vaccine against MenB in 2015, offering it to babies up to 12 months. ‘As these restrictions eased, meningitis cases have in turn risen from what had been an historic low in the previous year. In the most recent report, it noted the 55 cases reported in April to June 2022 were ‘triple the number of cases in the equivalent period in 2021 when 17 cases were reported and double the 29 cases reported in 2020’.
Risk from the disease ‘continues to be very low’, Dr Ladhani added, encouraging people to ensure they are ‘aware of the symptoms and signs of meningitis and septicaemia’.
