The longtime San Antonio Democrat served about five years and 10 months of a sentence that originally called for him to spend 12 years locked up.
As of today, state senator-turned-convicted felon Carlos Uresti will be a free man. Uresti, 61, is scheduled to be released from federal custody having served about five years and 10 months of a sentence that originally called for him to spend 12 years locked up. “Today marks the beginning of my next chapter,” he said in a statement. “After nearly six years in custody, including home confinement, my release on the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe signifies my fresh, new start.
The transfer to community confinement was because of the First Step Act, a Bureau of Prisons spokesperson said at the time. The act was signed into law by President Donald Trump to reform sentencing laws. It provides eligible inmates — generally nonviolent offenders — the opportunity to earn from 10 to 15 days of time credits for every 30 days of successful participation in recidivism reduction programs and productive activities, the Justice Department said in 2022.
