After a spirited public discussion, Carlisle school board voted Thursday to pilot the "Character Strong" character education program at Wilson Middle School this year.CARLISLE - Carlisle Area School Board voted 7-0 Thursday night to launch a pilot character education project in the district’s Wilson Middle School this year.
And to enhance the district’s larger efforts to deal with societal problems that always filter into schools. A review of Character Strong’s curriculum this week found no direct mention of issues like sexual orientation or critical race theory. “Where are the... dollars to enhance the reading program?” asked Walt Brown, noting that more than 40 percent of Wilson students scored below grade level for reading in the most recent state student achievement assessments.
“By definition this program is teaching values, and we all know that values are highly subjective,” said Heather Leatherman, another member of the “Team For Change” school board slate. Board member David Miller, who was not present for Thursday’s meeting, provided a written statement in support of tabling the program, arguing that if the public perceives that the program is being jammed through it’s effectiveness could be undermined by a large number of opt-outs.
