The Liberal government is \u0022closely monitoring\u0022 bipartisan legislation in the United States Congress seeking to prohibit TikTok from operating in the United States
The U.S. legislation, introduced Tuesday, is driven by concerns over the Chinese ownership of the short-video social media app and its parent company ByteDance Ltd. Republican Senator Marco Rubio introduced the bill in the Senate and Republican Mike Gallagher and Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi put forward legislation in the House of Representatives.
Canada introduced a new Indo-Pacific strategy in November that further aligns Canada with the United States in opposition to China. “We continue to have a constructive relationship with the Canadian government, and engage across departments to demonstrate how we protect the security and privacy of Canadian users, and to respond to any questions that officials may have,” the spokesperson said. “We recognize that with success and growth comes scrutiny, and are committed to not only meeting but exceeding Canadians’ expectations when it comes to the security and privacy of their data.
Parsons said a lot of the fears are theoretical, and based on politics. “There is probably a nub of national security concerns that are in there somewhere.”
