This week’s Olympic-themed session is ending an annual period of summer fun that aids research and helps train those working with kids with special needs.

In the waning days of summer, the downtown campus at the University of Texas at San Antonio has been alive with the sounds of play. Video games. Laser tag. Potato sack races. For 23 autistic adolescents and young adults, the fun, team-building and social connections they and their families and caretakers found at Camp Durango on Wednesday are all too rare. “A lot of times, there’s not many camp-like offerings, or even general services, for individuals with autism who are in that older age range.

hosts first-ever mariachi camp Open to autistic children and young adults ages 5 and up, usually has all its 150 summer slots filled within 24 hours when registration opens in April. This year, it had about 450 applicants. Along with the fun, the camp provides an opportunity for specialized research on social communication, while providing training and supervision for graduate students and undergraduate volunteers.

San Antonio’s TU CASA welcomes students with disabilities “They’re trying to communicate a need or a want, and understanding it helps my day-to-day,” Arias said. “Every day, you don’t know what you’re going to go home with, whether it be a scratch or a bloody nose, or whatnot. But …every day, one kid does something that makes you smile or laugh. That’s the part that makes me keep going.
