The NJSIAA found that Camden High committed recruiting violations in its basketball program
Camden’s DJ Wagner drives the ball to the hoop with St. Augustine’s Olumide Okebiorun and Elijah Brown defending during a boys basketball game at Camden High School, Monday, Jan. 23, 2023.Camden High must install a compliance officer funded by the city school district and approved by the NJSIAA as part of a settlement reached Tuesday morning prior to the state association’s controversies committee hearing regarding the Panthers’ recruitment of five star players from outside the city’s limits.
If the agreement is finalized, it would end a yearlong probe by the NJSIAA following revelations from a New Jersey Advance Mediaof Camden’s efforts to enroll star players like guard D.J. Wagner and Aaron Bradshaw despite neither residing in Camden in order to win a state championship. Despite the average cost per pupil being $22,346, the basketball players were charged a tuition rate of $1,500 per year. According to the district, only $500 had been paid by one parent.
“The state department of education basically acknowledged the veracity of the findings that they had in fact violated the recruitment rules and agreed to a settlement,” said Jose Delgado, a Camden resident who served on the school district’s board for 24 years. Money flowed in and out of Camden’s gym during the last two seasons. Spectators at the 2021-22 season’s home opener were greeted with $20 admission prices instead of the regular $2-5 in a city with 36% of the population living beneath the poverty line.
