Calls for Suspension of Nigeria Air Amid Fraud Allegations Nigeria
The House of Representatives Committee on Aviation has called for the suspension of the establishment of Nigeria Air, the country's proposed national carrier. The committee labeled the exercise a fraud and urged for the prosecution of those involved.
During an interactive session with government officials and relevant bodies in the aviation sector, the committee expressed dissatisfaction with the former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, for proceeding with the launch of Nigeria Air despite a court injunction and without provisions for sustaining its operations. The committee also criticized the involvement of Ethiopian Airlines and described the process as opaque, shoddy, and capable of tarnishing Nigeria's image internationally.
The committee's resolutions include suspending flight operations of Nigeria Air, forming a high-level Presidential Committee to review the project, prosecuting individuals involved, designating Nigerian indigenous airlines as flag carriers, and exploring alternative funding options.Premium Times, 6 June 2023
