The seven-year, non-renewable term of Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane - who is currently facing impeachment proceedings in Parliament - will end in October, irrespective of the outcome of the Section 194 inquiry.
CAPE TOWN - Parliament’s ad hoc committee tasked with nominating a new Public Protector has met for the first time. He’s also a co-chairperson of the joint standing committee on defence.
The 36-member ad hoc committee on the Public Protector is the largest committee ever to interview candidates to take up the Chapter 9 institution job.But they will be racing against the clock, with less than three months to nominate a candidate to the national assembly and onwards to the president for appointment.
The ad hoc committee comprises voting and non-voting members from all parties represented in the house."It’s quite a serious task. I accept it with trepidation," he said. The committee will meet again on Thursday to discuss advertising for candidates. It will have to report back to the National Assembly with a recommendation by the end of August.
