Cajun Cook-Off returns to downtown Mobile this weekend
The aroma of spicy Cajun food will fill Cathedral Square on Saturday as the 10th annual Cajun Cook-Off returns to downtown Mobile. The event runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features 21 teams competing to serve up the best Cajun-inspired bites.
FOX10 is a proud sponsor and competitor. But one team is drawing special attention: Davidson High School culinary arts students, who are among the youngest competitors ever to enter the Cook-Off—and the first high school team to participate in the event in a decade, according to the students.Beyond the food and friendly competition, organizers say the Cook-Off supports a mission that matters. Proceeds benefit the Child Advocacy Center, which helps abused children in the community. While the Cook-Off is packed with seasoned teams, Davidson’s culinary students are taking the competition head-on as part of Team Cunningham Bounds, serving dishes they helped develop and refine.Davidson’s on-campus kitchen has been undergoing upgrades, limiting hands-on time for students preparing for a major public competition. Local restaurateur Noell Broughton helped bridge that gap—opening his professional downtown kitchen to the team and mentoring them as they practiced Cajun cooking techniques. “It’s been really, really cool. I’m so grateful to have this opportunity for the kids,” said culinary instructor Rachel Baxter. “Of the three on the team—at least two of them want to go into culinary. This is a fabulous opportunity to work on skills and also the networking—people like Noell.” Team member Aiden Darris says he’s excited to represent Davidson—bringing an apple coleslaw to the table. “We’re the first high school to participate in ten years since it’s started—and kind of excited,” Darris said. Riley James, president of the Davidson Culinary Team, says the experience is about building skills—and building connections. “It’s a means of me getting more out there in the culinary field and get new connections and work with my team better and get to know them more personally,” James said.Video shows University of Alabama student falling into water in SpainMan arrested in fatal shooting on Vienna Avenue, Mobile police saySouthwest Mobile County Chamber of Commerce honors community leaders at annual galaSecond arrest made in Forest Glenn Court shooting; bond set for another suspect
