Bus strike looms ahead of hectic Easter travel period
A bone of contention that may trigger the strike is that the employers are allegedly refusing to negotiate health insurance benefits.The National Union of Metalworkers of SA has chosen a critical travelling period to threaten a national strike in the bus sector ahead of the Easter long weekend, demanding a 7% wage increase and insurance benefits.
A bone of contention that may trigger the strike is that the employers are allegedly refusing to negotiate health insurance benefits. The unions have been trying to negotiate with employers since January through the SA Road Passenger Bargaining Council and declared a disagreement in February, but the issue was still unresolved as employers refused to give workers a meaningful increase.
If this issue is deferred to the plants, the likelihood of most workers achieving this benefit is very low.
