Showdown between LIV and PGA at the Masters | Since LIV golf burst on the scene last year, there has been little love lost between the upstarts financed by Saudi Arabia and the traditional golf tours, the PGA of America and the European Tour.
LIV players have been banned from taking part in PGA events, but have sued their way into European Tour events.
The invitations are issued according to strict criteria, so in a way, Augusta did not really have much of a choice in the matter. They simply stuck to their own rules. As winners of the coveted Green Jacket [which the champions get every year] receive a lifelong entry into the tournament, Gary Player, Trevor Immelman and Charl Schwartzel could play.
The other two South Africans in the field are Louis Oosthuizen [who is a co-holder of the unwanted record of having finished runner-up in each of the four majors]. He has slipped down to 115th in the world, but seems to be the only South African in with any realistic chance of making any sort of challenge.
Patrick Reed, who in 2018 became one of the most unpopular-ever Masters winner, said that it would be ‘huge’ if a LIV player could win the Masters.If you’re able to go out and win, it brings a boost not only to yourself, but to the league and the team that you’re on. The storylines are going to be obviously LIV versus the PGA Tour and all that kind of stuff, but really at the majors, the top players will be playing against each other no matter where they come from.
"Most of us will get four cracks at it this year [in the major championships], and hopefully we get maybe a win out of it. Maybe we just show a really hearty effort.
