Buncombe County officials confirmed that water is beginning to flow for the first time in more than two weeks through the City of Asheville's pipes. During an Oct. 12 press conference, Buncombe County officials said that a crew from the City of Asheville's water department activated the 36-inch bypass, which moves water from the North Fork reservoir. The crew's success enabled water to be disbursed throughout the county and surrounding areas for the first time since Sept. 26, when Hurricane Helene ravaged the area and destroyed much of the City of Asheville's infrastructure. Lillian Govus, Director of Communications and Public Engagement at Buncombe County Government, said water crews are working 24/7 to return water to Asheville and surrounding areas and communities, specifically naming Swannanoa as having water. "My neighbors and I can confirm that water is beginning to flow, and for the first time in more than two weeks, folks in Swannanoa had water flowing through their pipes," Govus said. Govus congratulated the six crew members for establishing water flow and recognized the efforts of their and other water crews working to restabilize infrastructure, saying "This is one giant step forward in water restoration throughout the county."Black Mountain Fire Chief John Coffey, during the Oct. 11 press conference, said there were breaks in the water lines, and fire hydrants that are missing throughout the system. "It will not be a fast process for us to get full restoration, but the process is underway," said Coffey. This water contains sediment but is highly chlorinated to provide as much disinfection as possible.Turn off ice makers Close the valve to the hot water heater to prevent sediment from accumulating, and open the inlet once water is restored
