The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band will present its 22nd annual fall concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 at Vernon Hills High School.
A rare wind ensemble performance of an African-American symphony will highlight Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band’s upcoming concert. Titled “Freedom,” the concert will feature music honoring both military veterans and Black composers and musicians, said founding music director Howard Green. “We’re going to pay tribute to a very great but underplayed composer by the name of William Grant Still,” he said. “He wrote four symphonies but his first is his best-known called ‘The Afro-American Symphony.
“You don’t often see a piano concerto performed with a band but I think this is also going to be a unique experience,” Green said. Also, on the program will be “Red Tails,” a tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen; and highlights from the stage play “Showboat.” The jazz band will perform “‘Round Midnight” by Thelonious Monk, “Yardbird Suite” Charlie “Bird” Parker, “Manteca” by “Dizzy” Gillespie and “Freedom” by Jon Batiste, Green said.
