Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine attended a conference in Grove City on Monday, where 500 law enforcement officers and leaders gathered to discuss strategies on how to combat gang violence and drug cartels. The Corrections and Law Enforcement Security Threat Group Conference is aimed at sharing strategies to combat gang violence, domestic terrorism and other threats the state faces."The cooperation between the people who work inside the prisons, our parole people our local law enforcement is just very, very critical," DeWine said.
The governor also said that when someone is sentenced to prison, his or her criminal behavior doesn't end there. "We have gangs that are inside the prisons that are also outside the prisons," he said. "Many times they're trying to bring drugs into the prisons."DeWine also said that gangs aren't the only threat being discussed at Monday's conference. He said experts also will be talking about how drug cartels are affecting Ohio.
"We hope people come away with a better understanding of the gangs, a better understanding of the drug cartels, a better understanding of what each part of our criminal justice system does," he said. "This is the first conference for many, many years and it looks like it's going very well."
