As the conference worked to lock down members after Colorado bolted, a vote on bringing in the Aztecs was within hours

For one night — Aug. 3, to be exact — San Diego State believed it was on the brink of becoming the newest member of the Pac-12.

“It fell apart overnight,” Kilkenny told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “I went to bed Thursday night thinking I’d get to watch Oregon at Snapdragon and Viejas Arena. By Friday, not so much.” There are two ways to consider the Aztecs’ best and closest shot at joining the power “haves,” along with what signals success.

An expansion of either group brings its own media-rights realities, though a Pac-2.0 could build a case to retain a college football playoff spot. Kilkenny also said a group like that potentially could generate revenue at three times the clip of a growing Mountain West. Oregon and Washington are in. Then, they’re out. Arizona, Arizona State and Utah are in. Then, they’re out. The Big 12 jumped the Pac-12 in the media-rights line, scoring a reported $2.3 billion payday with ESPN and Fox Sports.

Legacy viewers, diplomatic code for older customers with more dollars at the ready, also have zero interest in streaming. You can hear the conversation now: “Betty, where’s the Apple TV password? I don’t see it under the cookbook in the kitchen.”
