The Cleveland Browns have once again reworked Deshaun Watson's contract, this time aiming to reduce future salary cap strain. The move comes after Watson suffered a season-ending Achilles injury and the Browns struggled offensively.
The Cleveland Browns are restructuring quarterback Deshaun Watson 's contract again to alleviate salary cap pressure in future years, according to a league source. The Browns and Watson agreed to the terms, which won't affect his 2025 cap number. Instead, the restructure focuses on spreading out the cap hit over the years after Watson's contract expires in 2026. This may not be the last restructure, as Watson's $72.935 million cap hit for 2025 remains unchanged.
The latest deal suggests Watson will stay with the Browns for the next two years. Watson, who signed a five-year $230 million contract after the Browns traded for him in 2021, suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 7 this season. Before the injury, Watson and the Browns offense struggled significantly. Watson had the lowest total quarterback rating (QBR) through the first six games, and the Browns ranked last in the NFL for total yards per game at that point. Watson has been largely unavailable in the past three seasons: an 11-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy after numerous sexual misconduct allegations, a season-ending shoulder injury that sidelined him for 11 games last season, and now the Achilles injury. After Watson's exit from the game this season, the Browns saw a brief offensive improvement with backup Jameis Winston starting, but the boost was short-lived, and Winston was benched after throwing three interceptions in a loss to the Chiefs. Dorian Thompson-Robinson is currently the Browns starting quarterback as they finish their season with a disappointing 3-12 record
