Watson has played in just 19 games over three seasons due to an NFL suspension and a series of injuries with the Browns, who gave him a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract in 2022.
The restructuring allows the team to spread the cap impact after the 2026 season, the person said, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hasn't released details of the move. The 29-year-old Watson has two years remaining on his contract at an average of $46 million per year. The move to restructure his deal won't prevent the Browns from adding quarterback talent in 2025, the person said. This season, Watson played in just seven games before suffering an Achilles tendon rupture. He has a 9-10 record as a starter with Cleveland. The Browns (3-12) have been a complete disappointment this season after reaching the playoffs last year with Joe Flacco, who was signed as a free agent after Watson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. Watson underwent surgery in October and is expected to fully recover. Although the team hasn't revealed its plans at the quarterback position, it's assumed Watson will be a candidate to start next season. It's also possible the Browns select a quarterback in the first round. The team hasn't had a first-round pick in the last three years after trading three to the Houston Texans to acquire Watson, who was once considered one of the best quarterbacks in the league
