Brothers nets 4 goals, Vaccaro siblings combine for 5 as Bernards clinches share of NJILL-Waterman Division
David Brothers of Bernards scored a game-high 4 goals and assisted on one Tuesday in the Mountaineers' NJILL-Waterman Division battle against Caldwell in Bernardsville. We will get this one out of the way quickly - just as David Brothers and the Vaccaro siblings did with an early surge they helped spark - so that the rest of this game report is not bogged down with silly word play.
Brothers - a senior attackman committed to Wagner - netted three of his game-high four goals in the first half as Bernards held a 6-3 lead, and Charlie and Finn Vaccaro each closed with two goals along with Jake Caldwell to raise the Mountaineers’ record to 6-0 in the Waterman. Junior middie Sean Murtagh scored three goals and senior attackman JonLuca DeStefano contributed two for Caldwell , the No. 1 seed in North, Group 1. It is altogether possible that these two sectional finalists from last year meet up again in the Group 1 final.
As the Mountaineers’ offense quickly slipped into rhythm, the defense came prepared to do its part, as well. Austin was pressed with the challenging duty of covering Caldwell’s top scorer, senior Jack Goldbach, but the junior clearly relished the opportunity. He held his man to one assist. “It’s really nice to have that start because it takes the pressure off the defense. We know that once we clear the ball, the offense will get going and score a goal,” Austin said.Brothers, if you recall, also said something about Caldwell’s toughness, and it displayed that side after falling behind, 4-1.
“Caldwell doesn’t go away,” the younger Brothers said. “We got screamed at a little at halftime, but then we turned it around and got our heads on straight. Games like this are really important right now because they help us get our sticks dialed in for the states.”
