Brockport, N.Y. — Residents of two apartments were displaced Friday afternoon when a basement wall collapsed as water broke through.

Firefighters survey the damage after a basement wall collapsed following an apparent water main break at the Winston Woods Townhouses in Brockport, Friday, Nov. 22, 2024. Firefighters responded to the Winston Woods Townhouses just before 3:25 p.m. after a caller reported a basement wall caved in and a large amount of water was flowing in.

A water main break had been reported Thursday, according to Brockport Fire District Public Information Officer Christopher Martin, but the cause of Friday's incident remains under investigation. "We've been told by the residents that there was a contractor here, he had dug it up and it was believed it was repaired," Martin said. "We don't know if the repair didn't hold, or if there was another break, but there was a large amount of water flowing and the wall collapsed as a result of the weakened state."Two of the four apartments in the impacted unit were occupied. No injuries were reported. Martin said the Red Cross was called to provide assistance.
